Mood/Tone- http://www.writerstudio.com/sampleclass/elements.html

Mood- the primary emotion of the whole story.
The mood encompasses the spectrum of human emotions, refelcting morose feeling of sadness and a bright hope for embracement of life.

Effect on the reader
When the mood is sad, it makes the reader feel sympathy for the characters, but when the mood is of a bright hope for the embracement of life, the reader feels hope for the character.

Tone- what the narrator of the book is feeling, it can change depending on the setting, or mood during a certain point of the story.
The tone is happy and festive at first because Gabriel and Gretta are meeting people and having fun at an annual party held by Gabriel's aunts, Julia and Kate Morkan. However, the tone then changes into sad/depressive, angry, confused and cynical when Gabriel and Gretta return home. This is because Gretta tells a sad story to Gabriel about her former lover, Michael Furey, and notices that she is not returning his love to him.

Effect on the reader
The change of tone in the story makes the reader lose the feeling of happiness for the characters. At the end of the story the reader feels sympathetic for Gabriel because Gabriel learns that Gretta is thinking about her former lover and realizes that his marriage lacks true love.
